Epoch AI has released a dataset tracking the intersection of machine learning performance and monetary expenditure over the last several years. This analysis shows that the cost of AI at a given performance level has fallen roughly 47% per quarter since 2023, marking the fastest price decline of any transformative technology in history.

The rate of cost reduction is 4x faster than that of DNA sequencing and 6x faster than general compute. The data also indicates that AI is becoming cheaper 18x faster than lithium batteries and 54x faster than electricity based on benchmarks through 1973.
