The AI developer established a physical biology facility in Northern California to automate scientific experiments using robotic units. Directed by the Claude AI with limited human intervention, the "wet lab" seeks to accelerate research into rare and traditionally undruggable diseases. Life sciences head Eric Kauderer-Abrams said the company is in the "very early innings" of using AI to automate the execution of lab work.

Anthropic will focus on preclinical research rather than clinical trials to avoid direct competition with pharmaceutical companies. This transition to real-world biological experiments occurs despite warnings from the company's own researchers that advanced AI could enable the creation of biological weapons or lead to catastrophic harm.
