The Federal Aviation Administration begins implementing a system designed to assist controllers in the Washington DC region by forecasting traffic bottlenecks before aircraft depart. The SMART tool provides advisory data to air traffic controllers to reduce volume in the area starting Monday.

Former FAA official Philip Mann stated that limiting the scope of the system reduces unknown variables. The rollout follows reports of AI failures in other government sectors, including a mistake that led to the killing of more than 100 girls at a school in Iran and a hallucination regarding nuclear material transport that nearly sparked a conflict with China.
