A federal judge has finalized Anthropic’s $1.5 billion settlement with authors who claimed their books were used as training data for the Claude artificial intelligence model, establishing the largest copyright class settlement in U.S. history.

Preliminary approval for the agreement was granted last September. Some authors opted out of the deal and maintain separate lawsuits. The settlement resolves the first major U.S. dispute over artificial intelligence training data to reach a final resolution.
