Developers of artificial intelligence systems should be held civilly and criminally liable for their work rather than depending on government regulation to shield them. Palantir CEO Alex Karp told CNBC’s “Squawk on the Street” on Thursday that some companies seek societal regulation specifically to avoid the first line of defense regarding the risks of their technology.

Nationalization of AI firms may be the only way to handle the liabilities attached to technology that could destroy 10% of the world, Karp said. He called for the creation of reasonable and enforced guidelines for the industry to address these risks, arguing that individual accountability is a more effective deterrent than broad government oversight.
