1 story1 FAA Deploys $875 Million AI Air Traffic System to Reduce Flight Delays↩︎ AI Sep 17, 1:09 PM EDT 7/6
The Federal Aviation Administration will roll out SMART, a new software package designed to forecast traffic problems and identify alternative routes when disruptions occur. The initial launch starts in the Washington D.C. area as soon as Monday before expanding to other airports across the country. The system analyzes runway capacity, airline schedules, and weather to predict congestion before flights depart.
Air Space Intelligence holds a 12 year contract worth $875 million to build the software and its supporting infrastructure. FAA officials stated that human controllers will maintain responsibility for aircraft separation, while the AI serves as a planning layer for routing and recovery from weather events.
