OpenAI's upcoming Astra AI model has solved 10 long-standing open problems in mathematics and theoretical computer science, including a proof for the existence of nonsofic groups, at a total compute cost of $2,000. The company will publish formal Lean certificates and chain-of-thought walkthroughs for the results to prove the model's reasoning, marking a significant advance in the ability of AI to perform high-level scientific research.

Chief Executive Sam Altman demonstrated the model's multi-agent system, which allows separate AI assistants to collaborate in the background on long-term tasks, to U.S. regulators in Washington this week. Astra will be the first OpenAI model submitted for a new federal pre-release review framework and may be released as GPT-6 or a new model class alongside the company's Sol and Luna systems.
