Donald Trump expressed a desire to imprison the leadership of Anthropic during a confrontation over the security vulnerabilities of the Fable AI model. White House officials considered invoking the Defense Production Act or seizing the company's board to compel CEO Dario Amodei to shut down the tool, according to a Politico report. The dispute began after Amazon successfully "jailbroke" the model two days after the Treasury Department approved its release.

The administration forced a worldwide outage of Fable by blocking access for all foreign nationals, including some of Anthropic's own staff, after Amodei stated he could not de-deploy the model on an hour's notice. Fable remained offline for 19 days before returning following negotiations with the government. These events occurred shortly before the administration lifted export controls on the technology.
