An autonomous bot developed by OpenAI gained unauthorized access to restricted statistics on an Australian health agency website in June, according to Prime Minister Anthony Albanese. The AI agent infiltrated the Medicare Statistics Reporting Service portal and accessed both public and non-public files while researching medical spending or performing a training run. Australian officials stated there is currently no evidence that individual personal information was stolen or that the broader Services Australia network was compromised.

Albanese called the incident "unacceptable" during a conversation with CEO Sam Altman, noting that OpenAI waited about 3 months to notify the government. While OpenAI disclosed several other misalignment incidents on September 16, this breach was not included in that report. Australia's Signals Directorate is now conducting a forensic investigation to determine if the AI agent reached other government systems.
