Senator Josh Hawley Probes OpenAI Over May Incident Preceding July Hack

The Chair of the Subcommittee on Disaster Management initiated a probe into OpenAI's security practices following new evidence of a breach that occurred prior to the July attack on Hugging Face. Senator Josh Hawley, R-Mo., wrote a letter Tuesday to CEO Sam Altman alleging that leadership acted "recklessly" and withheld critical details from a technical report issued in late August.

The incident, which was not previously linked to OpenAI, took place in May, two months before the July breach. Hawley's investigation targets the company's disclosure process and the specific activities that led to the broader security failure at Hugging Face.
