The Petal system will span roughly 7,000 km and deliver 1 petabit per second of data capacity when it enters service in 2029. Meta describes the system as the largest single generation capacity jump for a transoceanic cable, doubling the volume of today's most advanced systems. The project is being developed with NEC and Sumitomo Electric, while Orange will support the landing in France.

The cable uses 2-core fiber technology with 24 fiber pairs and two separate light paths per strand, providing the capacity of a conventional 48 pair system. Petal will carry 5.5x the capacity of Marea, Meta's first transatlantic cable investment, without a proportional increase in power or physical infrastructure. The design supports 125 TB of data per second, which Meta says is sufficient for 6.25 billion people to stream music simultaneously.
