A clinical trial participant who lost the ability to speak used a brain chip to tell his partner “I love you” in a synthesized version of his former voice. The 23 second demonstration showed the N1 implant translating brain signals into spoken words using an AI voice clone to achieve a goal of natural conversation speed.

Neuralink is developing the mind to voice technology for people with severe speech impairments resulting from stroke or ALS. The system remains experimental and currently awaits approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
