One law enables campaign finance regulators to impose fines of $5,000 per violation on social media influencers who fail to disclose paid political content. California has required such disclosures for state and local campaigns since 2023, but the state previously lacked the authority to fine or prosecute creators. Regulators may now refer these omissions to law enforcement for potential misdemeanor charges.
