A coalition of U.S. lawmakers has requested that President Trump negotiate a safety pact with China to limit the speed of frontier artificial intelligence research. Seventeen Democratic senators, led by Senator Chris Van Hollen, sent a letter urging the president to use his meeting with Xi Jinping this week to establish shared guardrails and mutually slow or potentially pause the development of the most advanced AI models to reduce global risks.

Trump has previously opposed efforts that could stifle U.S. AI growth and has stated that the United States must maintain its lead in the technology. While the president rejects the pause proposed by the senators, his administration has discussed a more limited mechanism with Beijing to share information regarding AI incidents.
