Mike Johnson Recesses House Until After November Midterms Despite AI Crisis Plea↩︎

The House of Representatives will not hold any more votes until after the November elections following a decision by Speaker Mike Johnson to end the current session early. Lawmakers leave Washington tonight, cutting short a one-week work period that was scheduled to continue through Thursday. More than 100 House Democrats signed a letter demanding that the recess be postponed to "confront the AI crisis" and establish safety safeguards.

Rep. Sam Liccardo of California criticized the seven-week closure of Congress, arguing the American people need action rather than a vacation. Democratic members have urged the speaker to prioritize artificial intelligence oversight and the protection of public well-being. Any legislation requiring House approval will not advance or be signed into law before the midterm votes conclude.
