Lutnick Meets AI Labs on U.S. Open Source AI Push to Match China↩︎

Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick has recently met with multiple AI labs to discuss ways to help US open-source AI reach parity with China, Andrew Curran said Friday, in a sign Washington could take a more direct role in the sector.

The discussions come after a 25-company letter released Thursday by Nvidia, Microsoft, Meta, Palantir and others urging policymakers to avoid "premature restrictions" on open-weight models. Curran said the meetings, together with other policy activity this week, suggest the US government could become more directly involved in open-source AI.
