The Petal subsea system connects North American and European data hubs using multi-core fiber technology to handle massive data loads by 2029. This 7,000 km cable will move 1 petabit per second between the U.S. and France, doubling the capacity of today's most advanced transoceanic systems. Meta is developing the network with NEC and Sumitomo Electric, and Orange will support the French landing.

The architecture employs 24 fiber pairs with two separate light paths in each strand to deliver 125 terabytes of data per second. This capacity is 5.5x that of Marea, Meta's first transatlantic cable investment, without a proportional increase in physical infrastructure. The project scales bandwidth between regional data centers to accommodate higher traffic from AI workloads.
