A brain-computer interface developed by Neuralink translated neural activity into audible words for a patient with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. Kenneth Shock used the N1 implant to communicate the phrase "I love you" by decoding the intention to speak at the phoneme level during the company's VOICE clinical trial. Shock is the third patient to receive the brain implant after losing the ability to speak.

The N1 system converts brain activity into text and synthetic audio to restore communication for people with severe motor disabilities. This trial utilizes the interface to turn neural signals into speech without requiring any sound from the patient. Neuralink shared the progress to highlight the potential for restoring communication to those who have lost the ability to speak.
